10. Trollhunter
A movie not trying to be realistic, but gives you the creepy feeling it is real. This surprisingly good movie from Norway almost makes you believe in Trolls. A ‘found-footage’ horror movie with a good dose of humor to show how crazy it actually is.

9. Paul
A comedy among my favorite movies is something that won’t happen often. This Sci-Fi comedy written by and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost contains tons of references to other Sci-Fi movies. Even if you don’t get the references, the strange alien Paul will keep you entertained for sure.

8. Anonymous
Was Shakespeare a fraud? Roland Emmerich, director of many big disaster movies (2012, Godzilla, Independence Day), tries to answer this question. The movie starts slow and confusing but when it settles down, it delivers a challenging but believable story about the British royal family and the writer of Shakespeare’s plays.

7. Sucker Punch
This action movie has it all, giant samurai demons, dragons, first world-war zombies, robots and to finish it some hot girls with big weapons. This movie is all about the special effects, a must-see at the big screen. Sadly, it was received poorly by the critics.

6. Let Me In
A remake of the 2008 Swedish movie Let The Right One In. A drama movie (not a horror!) about a young bullied boy who finds a new friend in his new strange next door neighbor vampire girl. Just like the original movie the story is really touching, although the atmosphere is less creepy in this remake it still feels good!

5. Hanna
What happens if you combine a classic story with a modern arthouse director? Hanna happens. It tells the story of a 16-year-old girl, trained as a assassin by her father, going out in the big world for the first time. Travelling across Europe we get to see some beautiful locations where the action takes place.

4. 50/50
A second comedy movie! A young guy gets diagnosed with cancer, he tries to stay calm about it but along the way he is coming to realize that he is going to die. Not a funny thing at all, if it wasn’t for the great actors and the awkward situations they keep getting into. The movie combines drama with comedy without losing respect for the sensitive subject. Oh, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks better with hair on his head.

3. Super 8
A movie from director JJ Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, what could go wrong? Not much, in this case. JJ Abrams delivers another great Sci-Fi movie. The acting of the group teenagers is surprisingly good and really sucks you into their stories. The movie is often compared to E.T., but I would like to compare it to Stand By Me. Focusing less on the monster but more on the group of teenagers.

2. Black Swan
I had to watch this movie twice to really see what was going on here. A ballet dancer gets the part for the evil ‘Black Swan’, but she doesn’t really qualify for it. Slowly she is turning more dark and evil, turning into the perfect Black Swan. A psychological drama which kept me guessing on why and how she was transforming.

1. Drive
A stunt-driver at day, getaway driver at night. A nameless driver gets into trouble when he meets a married girl he starts to like. When a heist together with her husband goes wrong he needs to sort out who betrayed them. And he does that with style! Speaking only when really necessarily but slowly showing his true violent self. Everything combined turns this movie into a tense and unique masterpiece!

Tegenover deze twee staan een hoop films die veel beloven maar weinig waarmaken. De originele Nightmare on Elmstreet is een echte klassieker en geeft je ondanks de gedateerde effecten alsnog kippenvel. Toen de remake voor 2010 werd aangekondigd had ik enige hoop op een goede film, helaas viel dit zwaar tegen en sloeg het qua sfeer volledig de plank mis. Hetzelfde geld voor andere remakes zoals Halloween en Friday the 13th. Recente films uit de bekende reeksen stellen keer op keer teleur, Saw 3D en Final Destination 5 blijven maar voortbouwen op het uitgekauwde concept en falen er in om de nodige vernieuwing in het genre te brengen.

Deze nodige vernieuwing komt wel voor in de buitenlandse horror films! De spaanse film [REC] (2007) bracht nieuw leven in het ‘handcam’ subgenre met een geweldige spanning. Andere Spaanstalige vernieuwende horror films zijn de kannibalen film We Are What We Are (2010) uit Mexico en de sfeervolle La Casa Muda (2010) uit Uruguay. Dat de fransen een goede horror smaak hebben wordt bewezen in de martel-horror Martyrs (2008), de bloederige film Haute Tension (2003) en de zombie flick La Horde (2009). Hollywood heeft een remake gemaakt van [REC] genaamd Quarantine, maar deze werd gematigd ontvangen. Er wordt nu hard gewerkt aan een remake van La Casa Muda.

Een meer geslaagde Hollywood remake is Let Me In (2010), een horror/drama gebaseerd op de toch meer sfeervolle Zweedse Let The Right One In (2008). Uit Noorwegen komt de komische horror Dead Snow (2009), de zeer aparte en komische Trollhunter (2010) en Cold Prey (2006) die voor een standaard slasher toch kippenvel geeft. Dichter bij huis vinden we de Britse films 28 Days Later (2002), het vervolg 28 Weeks Later (2007) en de martel-horror Eden Lake (2008).

Aziatische horrorfilms zijn meer mensen bekend mee, zoals The Ring en The Grudge welke beide succesvolle Hollywood remakes hebben.

Kunnen we hieruit opmaken dat Hollywood het niet meer in zich heeft om vernieuwende horror films te maken?

Conclusion:
The results show us that more songs are correctly recognized then incorrect! But it is a close match, which is disappointing. The newest songs (2011) are a clearly difficult for Shazam, the oldest songs tested (2003) have surprisingly good results. The italo-dance coverage is bad, not recognizing Gigi’s Silence is a big letdown!

Now the fun part! Let’s throw some songs at it which I think it will not recognize. These songs are bootlegs, unreleased, rare or 0day releases. These do not count for the main test.

7. The Crazies

Best horror movie of the year. The plot isn’t that renewing but the overall gore and scares are very good! It even scared me a few times!
If you are easily scared, don’t even think about watching this one.

6. Kick-Ass

This Japanese animation movie is visually the most stunning movie of the year. Part of the movie plays in a colorful virtual world, in the other part we meet probably the most coolest family ever.

4. Män som hatar kvinnor (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

I had never heard of the books or the writer before I saw this Swedish movie. The story is really good and the characters have a depth background which will influence the story. Sadly the second and third movie were not as good.

3. Inception

Don’t get me wrong, the movie is really good! I had hoped for some more depth on the dreaming levels. During the big mission it always stays clear what is a dream and what not. I wanted to be confused, doubting what I see was real or not.

For sure the most confusing movie of the year. The mystery that needs to be solved during the movie stays a bit strange. You keep trying to solve the mystery yourself until the end, which I did not see coming at all!

My personal favorite this year. When I had left the cinema, after I saw this movie for the first time, I still had goosebumps. The dark and claustrophobic setting really work! During the whole movie you only see one person, laying in a coffin, doing everything he can to get out of there alive. The tension is getting really high near the end when he is about to get rescued… or not?

Google is de populairste zoekmachine van Nederland. Maar Google is meer dan alleen een zoekmachine, denk hierbij aan YouTube, GMail en het advertentiesysteem. Google houdt jouw gebruik van deze websites in de gaten om je daarna advertenties te laten zien die het beste bij je passen. Maar welke informatie verzamelen ze precies en wat doen ze ermee?

Toen een tweetal studenten in 1998 Google oprichtten was deze puur als zoekmachine bedoeld. Ze hadden nog geen idee hoe ze hier ooit geld mee konden verdienen. Toen Google na vele giften van rijke bedrijfslui groot was geworden, werd het tijd om winst te gaan maken. Ze bedachten het plan om gerichte advertenties te tonen bij een zoekopdracht, genaamd AdWords. Bedrijven kunnen advertentieruimte kopen bij bepaalde zoektermen.

Je internetgedrag in kaart gebracht
Al snel groeide AdWords uit tot een groot succes. In 2003 kwam Google met een nieuwe functie om hun advertenties te tonen op andere websites. De inhoud van deze websites wordt gescand om zo de meest relevante advertenties te plaatsen.
Wat Google pas later bekend maakte is dat er ook gericht wordt geadverteerd aan de hand van de bezoeker. Wanneer je een website met AdWords bezoekt wordt er een cookie aangemaakt en hierin opgeslagen welke site je hebt bekeken. Een cookie is een klein bestandje dat een website opslaat op je computer om extra informatie in bij te houden. Elke keer wanneer je een andere website met AdWords bezoekt wordt deze cookie bijgewerkt met de nieuwe informatie. Natuurlijk staat deze cookie ook gekoppeld aan de zoekmachine zelf en worden je zoektermen erbij opgeslagen. Zo ontstaat er een compleet beeld van wat je op het internet doet en worden er speciaal op jouw internetgedrag gerichte advertenties getoond.

Google leest met je mee
In 2004 kwam Google met de gratis e-mailservice GMail. De AdWords advertenties die hierin getoond worden scannen de inhoud van de gebruiker zijn e-mails en tonen hierbij passende advertenties. Dit leidde tot grote ophef want veel mensen raakten bezorgd om hun privacy omdat hun e-mails ‘gelezen’ worden. Google beloofde haar gebruikers dat de inhoud van de emails alleen voor advertentiedoeleinden wordt gebruikt en niet voor andere zaken. Ondanks deze ophef is GMail erg populair geworden. Nu veel mensen een account hebben bij GMail is het voor Google gemakkelijk om al de eerder verzamelde informatie in de cookies te koppelen aan een gebruikersaccount.

Toen Google in november 2006 de video-website YouTube kocht is deze uiteraard ook in het geheel opgenomen. Welke filmpjes je bekijkt en welke beoordeling je deze geeft wordt meteen opgeslagen. Aan de hand van de opgeslagen gegevens krijg je op de startpagina van YouTube persoonlijke suggesties met voor jouw geselecteerde filmpjes. En natuurlijk werden de populairste filmpjes op YouTube al snel voorzien van AdWords-advertenties gericht op de inhoud van het filmpje en jouw kijkgedrag.

Google weet je te vinden
Eén van de nieuwste functies binnen de producten van Google is lokalisatie. Door het gebruik van verschillende technieken bepaalt Google waar je je momenteel bevindt. Wanneer je binnen de zoekmachine naar bijvoorbeeld een winkelketen zoekt, krijg je in de resultaten het dichtstbijzijnde filiaal te zien met behulp van een Google Maps mapje.

In mei dit jaar werd bekend dat Google tijdens het maken van de Streetview-foto’s voor Google Maps tevens alle draadloze netwerken in deze straten heeft gescand voor het IP-adres. Door deze actie weet Google exact in welke straat je bent als je via een draadloos netwerk een Google site bezoekt. Maar tegelijk lekte uit dat er tijdens het maken van deze foto’s internetverkeer op onbeveiligde draadloze netwerken werd gescand en verzameld door Google. Hier kan potentieel veel persoonlijke informatie tussen zitten zoals wachtwoorden, e-mails en bankgegevens. Hier is een grote discussie over ontstaan en verschillende landen hebben dan ook Google verboden de verzamelde informatie uit dat land te gebruiken.

Google weet dus wie je bent, waar je bent, welke sites je bezoekt, wat er in je e-mails staat en welke YouTube filmpjes je leuk vind. Google zegt al deze informatie niet voor kwade doeleinden te gebruiken maar alleen om hun producten beter op jouw af te stemmen. Of we Google kunnen vertrouwen met al deze informatie weet niemand zeker. Zou jij al deze informatie af willen geven om gebruik te kunnen maken van Google?
